As a NG regular, I'd like to say that your school did the right thing. Except for uploading art projects, there is no strong reason their pupils would need to visit NG during school hours.
And if some joker logs in and decides to ignore the rules and turn of the "A"-filter, suddenly there's stuff for adults on a screen - in a class full of minors. And my guess would be that exactly that happened...
If I was your school's admin, I would have made the same call there - just preemptively.
As for the Chrome & Edge stuff: As a Firefox user both seem crap to me. As does Firefox! Mozilla made newer iterations as unusable as they physically could.
